From Below the Wind to the Pearl of the Orient

A group of 41 students and 3 lecturers from the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Kota Kinabalu went for an academic visit to one of UNESCO’s heritage site, Georgetown, Penang from the 26th to 29th March 2010. Under the Cross Cultural Studies subject, this visit was to experience the culture, heritage and history of Penang which includes the Malay, Chinese, Indian and Baba & Nyonya. The students were able to experience authentic Penang culture besides learning about them in class which includes the food such as Nasi Kandar, Pickles, Roti Benggali, Char Kuey Teow and lots more. The UiTM group stayed at 1926 Heritage Hotel, which once served as the quarters for British colonial officers and local administrators. On the first day, the students were given the chance to eat Penang’s very own Nasi Kandar at Kapitan Restaurant and afterwards they were brought to see how the famous Roti Benggali was made and also handmade Songkoks. On the next day, they took trishaw rides along the heritage trail, there are many colonial buildings that are still standing in the heart of Georgetown such as the High Court of Penang and the Customs Building and they took stops at Penang State Museum, Islamic Museum and finally Fort Cornwallis. After that, they visited the mesmerizing Cheong Fatt Tze’s mansion, also known as the “Blue Mansion”, the fascinating Pinang Peranakan mansion and the beautiful Khoo Kongsi temple. On the third day, they visited the Penang War Museum. They were explained about the transitions of the site from being a British fort, a Japanese torturing site to being a museum. Being in the historical sites especially in the Penang War Museum, the students are able to appreciate more of Malaysia’s history, conserving our heritage and importantly our Prime Minister’s 1Malaysia vision.

so this is an article i wrote a few weeks ago. this was supposed to be published in a newspaper which i'm not sure which one and i don't know when it'll be out. i was assigned to do this by my lecturer, i accepted the task but somehow i'm not satisfied with the result. i suck at writing i admit it.

by the way, my 5th semester's final is coming and i'll have my industrial training next semester. wish me luck so the resort offers me a job after i finish OJT. i don't plan on continuing my studies for the time being. my brain is working kinda slow recently. haha

HMD5H1/H2, good luck for the finals and for our industrial training!

cheers!
